Society-Centered AI Hackathon

Join us for the inaugural Society-Centered AI Hackathon at Duke University, where teams will work to define and evaluate what it means for AI to be truly society-centered. Open to members of the Duke community and the broader public.

Challenge

Each team (2-5 participants) will create a presentation that includes:

  • A definition of "society-centered AI"
  • A proposal for benchmarks to evaluate AI models against this definition

Judging Criteria

Judging will be done by academic and industry experts. List of judges TBA.

Monica Lee

Monica Lee

Director of Research Science on the Social Impact Research and Central Youth teams at Meta

Monica Lee is a Director of Research Science on the Social Impact Research and Central Youth teams at Meta. Working at the intersection of social science and product engineering, she currently leads efforts to understand, measure, and mitigate Generative AI risks for teen users, after having recently led initiatives to reduce Generative AI misinformation ahead of the US2024 election. Before Generative AI work, Monica spent several years developing network methods to detect and enforce against adversarial political actors across Meta’s social media platforms. She has a PhD in Sociology from the University of Chicago and has published on social theory, musical taste, and network & quantitative methods for analyzing culture in The American Journal of Sociology, Sociological Theory, Poetics, and The American Journal of Cultural Sociology.

David Yoon

David Yoon

Partner at Ylab

David Yoon is a partner at Ylab, where he incubates and advises companies building AI applications in healthcare, civic tech, and the future of work. Previously, he was an engineering executive at Cityblock Health, Samasource, and FWD.us. He was an early core team member at the U.S. Digital Response and has served as a mentor at Schmidt Futures and Code for America. David has taught at UC Berkeley and holds a degree in computer engineering from McGill University.

Dedren Snead

Dedren Snead

Ford Foundation Global Fellow

Dedren Snead (he/him/his) is a computer scientist, artist, and Ford Foundation Global Fellow in Gaming and Artificial Intelligence. As founder of SUBSUME Media and SUBSUME Studios, featured in CNN and Black Enterprise, he established the world's first Afrofuturism technology studio in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. His work focuses on creating inclusive technologies and storytelling experiences that bridge digital divides while celebrating diverse cultural narratives through gaming, artificial intelligence, and interactive media.

Awards

    All participants will receive event swag. The first 75 registrants will receive T-shirts.


    The winning team will have the opportunity to share their work on stage at the Responsible AI Symposium on Monday, March 3, at the same venue as Yann LeCun and Ronnie Chatterji, to hundreds of representatives from academia and industry. The winning team will also be highlighted on both the Duke SCAI website and the Responsible AI Symposium website.
